As the lazy days of summer wind down, let the September issue of GAMES WORLD OF PUZZLES ease you into the fall season.
Articles aplenty await, including Todd Kreisman’s “Wordplaying by Ear” (page 36). We all know and love the wordplay that abounds in crossword puzzles. Some musicians also effectively incorporate puns and cleverly deceptive language in their lyrics. In his piece, Kreisman profiles three musicians—Tom Lehrer, Tim Minchin, and Bo Burnham—whose songs display their wordplay talents. Give it a read; you might end up with a bunch of new additions to your playlist!
Our articles also offer you a chance to learn about hobbies you may have never considered. Take miniature wargaming, for example. Jim Bowen, an avid player, provides a comprehensive beginner’s guide to the hobby in “Into the Fray” (page 40). In addition to the games themselves, many players paint their own miniatures, which are used as game pieces in elaborate setups in a range of scenarios. Even if it’s not your cup of tea, you will be impressed by some of their detailed creations.
And as always, our puzzle section encompasses a wide variety of challenges. Just a few highlights: Floris Smith’s math/logic combo “K-doku” (page 13); Todd Kreisman’s adaptation of the classic “Mad Libs” (page 10); Adam Fromm’s crossword variant “Marching Bands” (page 31); and Shawn Kennedy’s clever logo puzzle, “Sound Investments” (page 52).
All you need to do is start solving!
