This special 96-page Holiday issue is bursting at the seams with cerebral challenges to make the season merry and bright.
First, you might notice the cover, which features a brand-new holiday-themed Cartoon Rebus. If you’re new to Cartoon Rebuses, check out the solving instructions at the bottom of this page. But if you’re one of the many readers who have been eagerly awaiting their return, just jump right in!
New puzzles abound in this issue. Elizabeth Gorski, a veteran crossword constructor whose work appears frequently in the New York Times, returns to our magazine with “’Tis the Seasons” (page 23). For those who prefer cryptic crosswords, we have original puzzles by Stella Zawistowski, Richard Lee Clark, Bob Stigger, and Adam Fromm.
This issue also marks the debut of Andrew Parr’s column, “Discovering Japanese Logic Puzzles” (page 42). In the first installment, Parr focuses on Yajilin, a lesser-known Japanese logic puzzle that he aims to share with a larger audience. Solving hints and plenty of puzzles are included. If you’re looking to master a new skill, this is a perfect opportunity!
Finally, for those who are curious about puzzles outside of the U.S., we bring you “Puzzling in the U.K.,” a mini special section featuring four different types of “Arrow Words,” which are somewhat similar to our long-running “Pencil Pointers.” But don’t take our word for it—turn to page 70 and try some puzzles from across the pond!
All of this and much more awaits you. So make yourself a mug of hot chocolate, sharpen your pencil, and start solving!
